Update: Recall Returns

24 September, 2015

Further to our product recall notice and returns procedure please find below additional information that reflects our knowledge of the situation as of the 23rd September 2015.

DMM International has currently had 237 carabiners returned with displaced pushers. This is from the 120,000 carabiners that are potentially affected.

Investigating the reason(s) why the pushers become displaced is ongoing. The mechanism for failure seems to be dependent on several factors, involving combinations of tolerances, but analysis of the data from the thousands of carabiners that we’ve inspected is giving us a clearer insight into those factors.

At this point in time we can say that:

  • The vast majority of the carabiners that have been returned with displaced pushers fail very early in their life after only being opened a relatively few times.
  • The following models of carabiner are on the recall list but we have seen no failures to date:
  • Alloy Klettersteig – A84#
  • Alloy Captive Eye - A91#
  • Steel 10mm Oval – C45#
  • Steel 12mm Offset – C81#
  • Steel Captive Eye – C96#

We are maintaining the scope of the recall notice for the time being whilst we gather more information. This is because safety has to be our overriding concern.

We are working hard at DMM to make the turnaround time on all returned carabiners as short as possible. DMM International would like to thank all our customers for their support and patience whilst we rectify this situation.
