Eric Hörst is an international best-selling author, published researcher, renowned climbing coach and accomplished climber from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He began climbing in 1977 at the age of 13 with his older brother Kyle at their hometown crags in Pennsylvania, and nearly five decades later he is still training and climbing as hard as ever. He has established over 400 first ascents, primarily on his home cliffs in the Eastern United States, including the first 5.13 at the New River Gorge in 1987. His book Training for Climbing, along with his seven other titles, has sold nearly 500,000 copies worldwide in translations spanning Spanish, French, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Persian and Korean. Alongside writing and coaching, Eric is the founder of PhysiVāntage, a supplement company built specifically for performance climbers, and continues to coach elite athletes including his two professional climber sons, Cameron and Jonathan. A true climber for life in every sense of the phrase.

Get to know Eric

When did you start climbing?

I started climbing in 1977, almost 50 years ago. But I'm still motivated, training and climbing as hard as I did in my 30s. It just goes to show that climbing is a life sport.

What keeps you motivated?

The adventure challenge, and pump lust.

What has climbing taught you?

The importance of letting go of outcome-oriented thoughts and instead simply engaging each moment on the rock, and in life, fully and joyfully.

Favourite type of rock?

Sandstone. Hard to beat the stone at the Red River Gorge and New River Gorge.
