Wilson Cutbirth is an American climber, big wall specialist and rope work professional based in the American Southwest. Growing up in a small rural town, rock climbing felt out of reach as a kid, but the moment he discovered it, it took over completely. As soon as he was old enough to leave home, he chased it. That determination has taken him from the desert crags of Arizona to the remote wilderness of Wyoming's Wind River Mountains and beyond, including an expedition to establish a new free route on the Prow of Mount Roraima in Guyana alongside Leo Houlding's international team. Known for a powerful, tension-based climbing style on his beloved Gneiss, Wilson is equally at home on technical crack lines and remote big wall objectives. Alongside climbing, he runs GravityLine, his own rigging and rope work business, bringing the same commitment and precision to his professional life that he brings to the rock.

Get to know Wilson

Did you always know you were going to be a climber?

When I was a kid I thought I was going to be a runner. The moment I was made aware of rock climbing it stole my drive completely. Growing up in a small rural town it felt impossible to get into, so when I was old enough to leave home I chased it.

Which crag or mountain is your favourite and which do you consider the most beautiful in the world?

Insomnia Canyon outside of Flagstaff, Arizona gets my vote for both. As a wall, Mount Hooker in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming calls me back year after year and it keeps getting better.

How would you describe your climbing style and your anti-style?

My style is tension and power. My anti-style is anything that requires fighting pump.

What is the most valuable piece of climbing advice you have received?

The first valuable piece of advice that comes to mind was to enjoy the process. Enjoy the grind and the success.

Favourite type of rock?

Gneiss.

Gates in or gates out?

Cams gates in, quickdraws gates out. That way you can tell the difference by feel without looking.

What are your professional plans for the coming year?

To level up GravityLine, my personal rigging and rope work business.
